Residency 3.0.: Exploring Porcelain

The Hochschule für Gestaltung (HfG) Offenbach, supported by the Crespo Foundation and the Aventis Foundation, is offering an international residency program at the Höchster Porzellan-Manufaktur (HPM).

'RESIDENCY 3.0 exploring porcelain' supports national and international artists and designers and offers them a free space to research, experiment and develop innovative concepts in working with porcelain and ceramics.

The program is aimed at graduates of art colleges, academies or related educational institutions who have intensive experience with ceramic materials and would like to deepen their artistic or design practice, especially with porcelain.

The aim is to promote young artistic talent in the field of porcelain and to further develop the tradition of porcelain design in the context of materials research. New concepts of form, material and design can be explored and developed through experimental work with porcelain.

Höchster Porzellan-Manufaktur: Unique research and learning location

The residency is based at the Höchster Porzellan-Manufaktur, the second oldest porcelain manufactory in Germany, founded in 1746, and a new satellite location of the Hochschule für Gestaltung since 2023. The Hochschule für Gestaltung is transforming the Höchster Porzellan-Manufaktur, which is steeped in tradition, into a place of research and learning where porcelain design is further developed.

The scholarship at the Höchster Porzellan-Manufaktur offers unique conditions for new approaches in linking the traditional craftsmanship and artistic know-how of the HPM with innovative interdisciplinary teaching and research concepts of the HfG. These include new digital processes such as ceramic 3D printing, robotics, new digital surface finishes and opening up to other material groups, processes and contexts.

In the residency program, the porcelain artists are provided with a studio with work and material equipment. The scholarship holders use HPM's production facilities and workshops. The production area of the Höchster Porzellan-Manufaktur includes: Mold making, casting, embossing and painting. In addition to the 2.3 m³ gas kiln, suitable for annealing and glost firing up to 1400°, there are 60-liter electric chamber kilns in which annealing, decorative firing and glaze firing can take place. Work equipment and materials are provided.

Working in residency

For 4 months, the scholarship holders can deepen their work with porcelain at HPM with an artistic project - the plan is to work at least 4 days a week, 6-8 hours a day at HPM. During their stay, the scholarship holders will work on the realization of their concept as well as the execution, exhibition and documentation of their project work. They are invited to make innovative use of the practical possibilities of the Manufaktur and to enter into dialog with students, teachers, each other and the local community in workshops, lectures, evening events and exhibitions. The residency team welcomes and guides the scholarship holders through the program.

A jury of experts from teaching, research and the porcelain manufactory selects the scholarship holders.

The residency program starts twice a year, parallel to the HfG semester periods.

The next Residency 4.0 is planned for October 2025 to February 2026.
