Forms shape norms. Norms shape forms.
Design
The research project Shaping Norms. Norms for Shaping is dedicated to the analysis of the complex and dynamic interdependency between the concepts of form(ing) and norm(s). It examines how this principle of dependency creates both restrictive and potential-promoting framework conditions for creative (industrial) design processes. The design science research adopts a pragmatic view here: the interrelationship between norm (technology) and form (design) is interpreted as cyclical, and this not only forms the necessary basis for social interaction, but also serves as a driving force for continuous further development. Complexity, reduction, order, connectivity and progress are the relevant terms for design and standardization processes. This perspective sheds new light on the tension between freedom and constraint, creativity and regulation, and individualism and universalism.
