Markus Holzbach is Professor of Visualization and Materialization at the Offenbach University of Art and Design since 2009. There, the qualified architect and materials and process engineer heads the Institute for Material Design, or IMD. Having trained as a moldmaker in a model workshop, he went on to study materials and process engineering at Koblenz University of Applied Sciences. From 1992-93 he studied in Switzerland, subsequently working as a development engineer. After gaining a degree in architecture at Technische Universität Kaiserslautern between 1994 and 2000, Markus Holzbach worked as assistant to Werner Sobek, lecturing and researching at Institute of Lightweight Structures (IL) and Institute of Lightweight Structures and Conceptual Design (ILEK) attached to the University of Stuttgart, where he also gained his doctorate. Since 2005, Markus Holzbach has worked independently in the fields of architecture, design and materialization. He is an a registered architect with the Chamber of Architects for Rhineland-Palatinate since 2007 and was Visiting Professor of Mathematics at Koblenz University of Applied Sciences between 2008 and 2010. From 2010 to 2016, he was Vice Dean and from 2016 to 2019, he was Dean of the School of Design at HfG Offenbach. He has numerous lectures, publications, exhibitions and accolades to his name and has been an assessor and jury member on multiple occasions. Markus Holzbach is Visiting Professor at Politecnico di Milano, Italy. He has lectured a.o. at RWTH Aachen University, the Berlage Institute in Rotterdam, Netherlands, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, USA.
